Homosexual movement's "martyr" story discredited

Matthew Shepard has become an icon of the same-sex movement after he was violently mudered some fifteen years ago. He has become the poster boy of the gay movement's fight for hate crimes legislation throughout the country. His story even inspired several films and, allegedly, a federal hate crime legislation signed into law by Prez Obama in 2009.

Now a new book seriously casts doubt on the story that he was a victim of a hate crime. Stephen Jimenez's new book, The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard, contradicts police testimony and public opinion about the motive of the murder. Based on "rigorous journalistic standards," it argues and claims that the murder was motivated by drugs and money.

Anyone worried about hate crimes should now be concerned with the prospective treatment of Mr. Jimenez.

I wondered over the bonafides of the book. Who is endorser Hampton Sides?

"Sides is editor-at-large for Outside magazine and has written for such periodicals as National Geographic, The New Yorker, Esquire, Men's Journal, and The Washington Post. His magazine work, collected in numerous published anthologies, has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing."

Oh!

The discrediting is discredited in turn: http://equalitymatters.org/blog/201310020003 http://mediamatters.org/blog/2013/10/15/attorney-dismantles-stephen-jimenezs-matthew-sh/196432

To be fair, it seems to me that the arguments on both sides of this issue are circumstantial and inconclusive, at best. It's always hard to guess at motives, when they are not overtly stated. At best, one can infer.

What is clear enough is the vested interest the LGBT community has in championing this as a monument to their "victimization." I'm less certain as to Jimenez' perspective.

What is also clear is that the LGBT lobby now has the mainstream media securely in it's pocket. This means: (a) the LGBT community can no longer credibly assert its "victimization," and (b) that many alternative types of authentic victims will go virtually un-noticed in the press.

Like the "gay" hate-crime perpetrated against Mary Stachowicz, for instance.
