Detroit Vocations Pilgrimage Has Ad Oriéntem Mass at Altar of St. John Vianney

A group of 14 young men discerning entering the seminary and seminarians from Detroit’s Sacred Heart Major Seminary recently made a pilgrimage to France. Their travels were well-documented on social media. One of the most interesting sights was the below photo of Holy Mass [in the Ordinary Form] being celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Donald Hanchon at the altar of St. John Vianney in Ars.

It was not too long ago that it would have been unimaginable for anyone associated with Sacred Heart Seminary to have been involved with a Mass celebtated ad oríéntem. While such practices may not yet be enthusiastically supported, at least they no longer seem to be prohibited. For anyone who questions whether the times are changing, we submit this as an encouraging sign of progress.

Solemn High Mass in Marine City

Many of our readers know Fr. David Bechill, a young priest who has been an enthusiastic proponent and celebrant of the Extraordinary Form since his ordination. Fr. Bechill will be reassigned effective July 1 to Our Lady of the River Parish in Marine City, Michigan, which encompasses three churches including Holy Cross in Marine City. Even before his official assignment begins there, Fr. Bechill took the initiative to organize the first Traditional Latin Mass to be celebrated at Holy Cross in over 45 years, with the specific intention of exposing the students in the parish school to the Extraordinary Form. It was a Solemn High Mass with Deacon and Subdeacon, no less. This event received no publicity and only came up in a recent conversation with Fr. Bechill. The fact that such a major event could take place so quietly is another sign of the growing “normality” that the Tridentine Mass has achieved in today’s Church, a welcome development indeed.

Cardinal Sarah Recommends Ad Oriéntem Celebration of the Ordinary Form

On May 23, 2016, Robert Cardinal Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Sacraments, granted an interview to France’s Famille Chrétienne magazine in which he recommended celebration of Holy Mass [in the Ordinary Form] ad oríéntem, the classic posture of the priest facing the altar in the same direction as the faithful. His Eminence declared, “…as soon as we reach the moment when one addresses God – from the Offertory onwards – it is essential that the priest and faithful look together towards the east. This corresponds exactly to what the Council Fathers wanted.” Cardinal Sarah will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Sacra Liturgía conference in London, England, July 5-8.

Retreats Worth Considering

Retreats structured around the Tridentine Mass are being held in North America with some regularity. Organizations which offer them are listed below.

The most frequent such retreats are organized by the Fraternity of St. Peter. Upcoming Ignatian Retreats led by Fr. James Buckley, FSSP: July 15-17 for women; July 22-24 for men, held at St. Benedict Abbey in Still River, Massachusetts. For information, contact: janthonybuxton@yahoo.com.

The nearby St. Benedict Center, also in Still River, MA, offers a summer retreat for young men age 14-18. Information is at: https://www.saintbenedict.com/index.php/apostolates/montfort/item/119-montfort-youth-retreat.

The priest of Chicago’s St. John Cantius offer occasional retreats, including an annual Lenten retreat in Chicago. They intend to develop their St. Anne Chapel in Lawton, Michigan into a retreat center. Upcoming retreats [and shorter workshops] are listed here: http://www.sanctamissa.org/workshops/for-laity/.

The Institute of Christ the King offers an annual retreat for members of its Society of the Sacred Heart. The 2016 retreat was recently held in Chicago. More information: http://www.institute-christ-king.org/sacred-heart-society/.

Locally, retreats offered by Miles Christi are well-run and orthodox, however at this point in time they do not yet include the Extraordinary Form. Information: https://www.mileschristi.org/activities/spiritual-exercises/.
